When Harry Met Bev

When Harry Met Bev

Religion and politics. Our romance started over politics, and will culminate in a beautiful church wedding.

During
the 2004 election, I (Bev) was bewildered by the “red state/blue state”
discussion in CM’s St. Thomas More Room (aka, the “War” Room). Harry
sent me a link explaining what this meant. Fortunately, we are both
conservatives, so for most of 2005 we argued amiably for the same side
in the War Room. Then a few of us decided to form a committee to “bring
the War Room together” for a NYC-based event called ‘Lovefest’ in
January 2006, Harry was there.

I was so impressed with him. His
military "get-it-done" attitude. His generosity. His kindness and
self-effacing demeanor. His humor. Then, he sent me flowers. That
started the whole thing.

A long distance relationship, from
Oregon to Connecticut, ensued. This went on for weeks and weeks, and
when he started to ask me to marry him, I told him I couldn't possibly
move to the West Coast because I had my 84 year old uncle nearby. I was
his sole near relative. That was Feb 7. On Feb 8, my uncle John died of
a massive heart attack.

Harry was on the next plane out of
Portland to help me with the funeral. That weekend, he was my rock. By
Sunday, I'd agreed to come to Portland for a week in March, and to
bring my son. By Easter, we were in Florida at my relatives, showing
off my beautiful emerald engagement ring.

The wedding date is
July 22, 2006 in Stamford. Big, Gothic church. Latin Mass. Candlelight.
And LOTS of friends from Catholic Match in attendance!

“O Lord, I have loved the beauty of Your house, and the place of the tabernacle of Your glory.”

Psalm 26

DENIS — glad you asked! I just happened to look at this old story today. Harry and I have been talking about writing an article for Catholic Match as we will have been married five years this July.

The short answer to your question is this: WONDERFUL. Our marriage has turned out to be such a wonderful, exciting experience — filled with faith, love and hope. Better than we could have ever imagined.

The truth is that all of our liberal, secular friends — the cynical ones, at least — were privately betting this would never last. Too many counts against us — our age, coming from different coasts, the need to raise my remaining young son.

All of these have been challenges to some degree, but really nothing in the grand scheme of things. Married life has turned out so much better than we could have ever imagined — and largely because of our shared faith.

In the words of my liberal Anglican girlfriend — “It must be your BLOODY RELIGION.” LOL

  21. Hi, am a non pay , a brand new member for this month since am yet reading profiles and love stories, to see if, this is a safe , good site to meet someone in person without any harm. What I have read seen so far that this is the site that God leads me to find an answer to my questions to him. Wonderful, I and a shy woman in from of a man at the beginning and really do not understand how I can go out and meet a man for the first time without brake my nervous! smile. Am very friendly when I note that there are aceptance for me in the man eyes.. But I can see that it will be a piece of cake in CM. I congratulate all this women and men that had found their match and are living a wonderful life together. Hoping that my happy face post will be here to be follow with all this nice comments from the group of friend that seem I will have here. I too, do not want to way long to meet someone in person.
