Mom & Dad Down The Road: What’s A Healthy Distance?

How close do you live to your parents? How close should you live?

We polled CatholicMatch members on how far they live from the spot they grew up, and 3,449 have responded.

The most common response, with 38 percent, was “under 20 miles.” The second most common response was 250 miles or farther, with the third group falling at 25-50 miles. Three percent said they grew up on the same road they currently live.

“Incredible!” Marge-570346 wrote. “Most polled either haven’t left home or left and came back. [I] must admit, while I lived in a dozen or more places in the U.S., there is no place like home…”

David-617636 offered evidence, sharing “I have lived in the same place all my life.” Patrick-623720 announced “just moved back to my hometown,” and Stacey-599004 wrote, “I am blessed to teach at the same school I attended.”

“Wow – it just shows how important family is to people,” observed Mike-483575.

What do you think? What are the advantages of living near family members?

Is there such a thing as being too close? How can that affect your dating life?

Recent unemployment brought me back to “home base” — quite literally (I’m living with my parents for the first time in 35 years). When you are going through hard times, there is no better place to be than among family and old friends. If I can find a job here, I’ll be a happy camper!

Ditto that. I lived back east for 20+ years. I moved to California (where I’m originally from) early 2009. I couldn’t find a job there, so, four months ago I moved in with my parents here in Montana.

Right now I’m in the Midwest for the last 7 years and family is in New England. I only really miss it a few times in the year and visit about once a year or they come here. Increasingly I miss having them see the kids but I’m not a homebody I travel and keep busy. Thier is something said for being a days travel away to keep your independence and living your own life while in moderation since I have a car and the will. In the end most people seem to want to return to roots but it takes courage to uproot and move to the new world like immigrants coming to the US in its infancy. That is the kind of excitment and oppurtunity that I have in me.
