Single & Patient: Trusting God’s Filing System

We must trust God's perfect filing system above our own

This past Sunday night, I sat on my bedroom floor in front of a brand-new three-door metal filing cabinet. It wasn’t my most exciting purchase, but my overflowing portable plastic filing containers were practically begging for more space and organization.  When the new filing cabinet was first situated in my bedroom, I stared at the shiny black metal structure. Paying my own bills, getting a full-time job and moving into my own apartment is one thing, but purchasing a file cabinet and actually being excited about it is, well, so adult.

I sorted through pay stubs from my first job, read through “Sweet 16” birthday cards and rolled my eyes at cheesy English papers I had been so proud of in high school. College tuition statements mixed in with car-loan payments, my full-time job offer letter and a thick packet detailing my 401k retirement plan. The old merged with the new and the past filtered into my present as I silently organized, labeled and filed.

Hours later, I proudly took a step back to admire my work. My life stood before me in that new black file cabinet, neatly categorized, alphabetized and organized. Life would be much simpler, I thought to myself, if everything could fit tidily in a file cabinet. If only we could file away complicated relationships, the uncertainty of the future or the challenges of this world. As Catholics we know that the reality of our life here on Earth is that some things we cannot simplify or package neatly with a colorful bow.

As I closed the metal doors on my new file cabinet, I smiled with the realization that God already has my future on file. It’s flawlessly organized, and He will let me work through each folder in His timing. He’s made the labels. He’s made the contents. And He gives us His peace to enjoy His perfect organization.

Which aspect of your life do you wish you could organize in a file cabinet?

  1. I wish I could organize the here and now!!! My childhood, my marriage, my children and grandchildren, my career, my widowhood, my retirement is all neatly filed. Now I am just SINGLE and I feel lost and unsure of myself. I need to make changes but am unsure what to change or for that matter, I not sure IF I want to change!!

Hi Levan. Have you read the book Title: Who Moved My Cheese?: An Amazing Way To Deal With Change In Your Work And In Your Life
      Author: Spencer Johnson
It worked for me. It sends out the message that if you continue to do what your doing you will continue to get what you’ve got and nothing will change for you. I was like you not sure if i wanted to change or if i was just scared of change, but after reading that book it helped me change my thinking and stop being “Stuck”.
      good luck.

I have learned and continue to trust in God. Everything occurs under his time, not mine.

  3. I believe GOD can be trusted to fill my life. I had and will continue having experiences when GOD showed and will show me HIS miracles. All I can do is just pray and keep on trying.
