Audrey Came To The Church & Chris Was Waiting For Her

Audrey and Chris on the Charles River in the flush of new romance

Audrey was a new convert to the Catholic Church, having been welcomed home Easter weekend of this year. There was no doubt in her mind that she wanted to meet someone who would help her grow in her new faith.

She found a like-minded soul nearby in Chris, They were both finishing up school in Boston — Audrey at the Wentworth Institute of Technology and Chris had just graduated from Northeastern — so it was easy to move their relationship from online to the real world in an equally quick matter of time.

They each admired the other’s faith. Audrey liked how Chris had Catholicism at the center of his life. Chris admired Audrey’s spiritual ambition, how she had chosen to seek out conversion of her own volition. The natural chemistry they felt was undergirded by that strong foundation.

The chemistry was so strong that Chris couldn’t wait for their first date. After agreeing to meet a pub on a Wednesday, he quickly tried to move it up a day. “(He) asked if he could come to my neighborhood for a walk on Tuesday,” Audrey said.

“It had only been five days that we had even known one another existed, and we already felt like old friends.” By the time they had known each other a week, they agreed to date each other exclusively.

Summer was a busy time and involved travel for Chris, while Audrey was finishing up her degree.

Audrey believes that what seemed like an inconvenience for a developing relationship was in fact a blessing a disguise. Talking on the phone forced them to develop conversations with each other at a deeper level than might have been the case if they were seeing each other personally. It was able to speed up the process of getting to know each other and gave their relationship the advantages of an LDR without the expense of plane tickets and phone bills.

“We found that we wanted the same things in life… and that we wanted to spend our lives together,” Audrey told CatholicMatch.

The marriage proposal is one that won’t be forgotten by either one anytime soon, and not for the standard reason of its importance. Chris led Audrey on a walk through Harvard Square, to an area where they’d first kissed. It took Chris a few tugs to get the blue box out of his coat pocket, tipping Audrey off as to the question that was coming.

He reached for the wrong hand, and she tried to subtly switch him to her left…at which point Chris opened the box upside down.

In a relationship built on true love, these are funny stories that stand the test of time, rather than an embarrassing faux pas. True love is what Audrey and Chris have for each other and she ratified that with her answer to the question that was finally asked—“yes, yes, of course yes.”
