Michelle Learned Her Soulmate Was An Hour Away

Keith and Michelle share a love for learning and for each other

Sometimes a relationship starts because one person decides to take a chance and step out of her comfort zone. Other times a relationship starts because a person finds that someone else, unbeknownst to him, is already in his comfort zone. The latter is what gave Michelle and Keith’s courtship a jump start.

Both are in their early thirties and live in New England. Michelle is in Connecticut, and on several occasions received a “smile” emotigram from Massachusetts native Keith. Thinking he lived too far away, she didn’t respond. He sent her a couple more smiles and on the final one she decided to check and see just how far he really was from her. Lo and behold, it was only an hour-plus up the freeway.

Michelle believes she was nudged by the Holy Spirit to do a modest amount of research to dispel her misconceptions about distance. They messaged back and forth a couple times and then connected by phone.

That call would be, as Humphrey Bogart might put it, the start of a beautiful friendship. And much more.

Michelle and Keith share a great deal in common, starting with a commitment to education. She teaches Religious Studies at a Catholic high school, while he is a librarian and college English instructor. Their conversations flow like the soul mates like they are—they laugh together and even finish each other’s sentences, so connected are their thoughts.

It was the fall of 2010 when they met and by January, Keith was ready to propose and he used his creativity to do it in a way that would be close to Michelle’s heart. As they watched a movie, he had attached the ring to one of the cats’ collars. Even before she knew what was going on, Michelle couldn’t help but note that Keith had been exceptionally authoritative in breaking up a fight between the two cats earlier in the evening. Finally he beckoned the one with the ring up on the sofa. And the kittie Electra delivered Michelle her engagement ring.

They are prepared to be married in August in her Connecticut hometown. “Since that (first) phone call, my life has never been the same”, Michelle told CatholicMatch. “Never better, happier, nor more beautiful. We talked for hours, and were both amazed that it felt like talking to a long lost friend. We haven’t stopped talking since.
