Blessed Are You

Going through a divorce and trying to rebuild your life afterward can make you feel like a failure. It can strip you of your self-esteem and make you forget you are a person who is worthy to be loved.

But, in the gospel of Matthew, chapter 5 we read the following passage: “Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted…” When you mourn you are not happy, but you are blessed! Blessed because God is closer to you now than ever before. And blessed because God rewards those who suffer.

How does he reward us? Well, frankly, there are too many ways to count… you may be praying for a job, you may be praying for the pain to stop, you may be praying for the healing of your children, you may be praying for so many things, and God will bless your requests according to the ones that He knows will make you happy. But one of the primary ways He rewards you is in purifying you… in your refinement as a human being.

That might seem as if that’s not a reward at all, and I know why you might feel that way… That’s because you didn’t want the pain in the first place. You didn’t want to be divorced, you wanted to be happy. But I can attest to the fact that being tested by the fire is one of the greatest rewards I have ever received. Suffering changes you in a way you would never have thought possible. Suffering makes you a different person – a better person, if you allow that. You become stronger, you become more virtuous, you become wiser – not cynical. As you go forth, know that you are blessed in your life and that God will reward your perseverance.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. – Matthew 5:4
