Gus and Maria had each gone through long and difficult periods of struggle over many years in the hopes of finding the right person to share their life.
Maria, 37-years-old and from Mexico had a 10-year-old son who hadn’t known a father since the age of one. She was looking for someone who shared her values, and when she saw an ad for CatholicMatch online she decided it might be a good fit. On December 7th of 2010 she made contact with Gus, a 45-year-old government consultant living in Texas.
“This is when our love story began,” Maria recalled. “I learned to use Skype, Google and every technology that would allow us to communicate with each other.” The couple spent hours having video talks through Skype at night and messaging each other by day. Monthly visits to see one another in person kept the bond between them growing.
Then this past October they were hit with a challenge. Gus was transferred to Washington D.C., so those monthly visits were now exponentially more difficult. “It was during these visits we knew we wanted to be with each other for the rest of our lives,” Maria told CatholicMatch.
So before he moved east, Gus proposed marriage and Maria accepted, getting the ring that once belonged to Gus’ mother.
Maria has since followed Gus to the United States. She is working as a graphics designer, and her son Emilio has embraced having a true father in his life for the first time.
There may have been pain and loss along the way to each other, challenges upon meeting and a lot of Skyping to make it happen, but Gus and Maria are well on their way to making a new life with each other—the one they’ve both been seeking all along
