What’s Your Motto?

In times of difficulty such as divorce, many people reach for something to use as a life preserver… something to keep them afloat or distract them from the pain. Sometimes, oftentimes, it is the wrong thing, such as spending all their time working, drinking alcohol in excess, or diving into another relationship. But to get through the rough times with grace and your sanity, the best life preserver after putting yourself in God’s hands, is latching on to something that will keep you focused and motivated. Setting goals and priorities are probably the best way to do this and here is a quick tip to help you remain focused on the goals you set: Have a motto.
Having a motto is simply adopting a brief statement that incorporates your goals into words and reminds you of why you are fighting this good fight. A few examples of this would be John Paul II’s “Be not afraid!” if you are experiencing a lot of fear and anxiety, or St. Francis’ “Make me a channel of your peace,” if you are having trouble managing anger or patience. Mottos come in handy most when you find yourself overwhelmed or experiencing strong emotions because saying your motto out loud or under your breath like a quiet prayers reminds you of your goal to be a better person and find peace. So, what’s your motto?
