It can sometimes feel like God doesn’t answer your prayers. You pray, you ask Him for His help and guidance, you confide in Him all the hurts and worries and the deepest secrets of your heart. But then you look around and your circumstances may not have changed. Then you might wonder, “How long must I continue to pray before God will answer my prayers?”
Consider the story of Zachariah and Elizabeth. They were “advanced in age” and well beyond the age of bearing children naturally. It was so unlikely that a woman of Elizabeth’s age could possibly bear a child, that their situation seemed hopeless. More than that, childlessness was thought of as evidence of God’s disfavor and likely caused people in their community to wonder what terrible sin they must have committed. But Zachariah and Elizabeth remained faithful to God and lived good and holy lives. “And they were both righteous in the sight of God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and requirements of the Lord” (Luke 1:6). The Lord heard the prayers of Zachariah and Elizabeth and even though their situation seemed hopeless, He gave them the child they longed for. And not just any child; their child became known as John the Baptist!
God did the impossible for Zacharias and Elizabeth. So, continue to pray, knowing that God is always listening.
Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and never give up. – Luke 18:1
