Getting Rid Of The Mind Sludge

When you go through a divorce, especially if you live alone, the bad thoughts can easily take over and control your mind. Thoughts that make you think the worst about your situation. Thoughts that are like unruly children running through the house making a mess and ruining everything. Mind sludge.

It’s difficult to handle so much stress at once. Life as you knew it and were comfortable with, is now gone. Then there are the other changes that come with the territory… loss of belongings, loss of friendships, loss of identity. It can be crippling.
But don’t ever forget these two very important things:
First, that you still have people who love you. Even if you are very far away from them, pick up the phone and talk to someone. Call your parent or sibling or the best friend you’ve known since junior high. Call your pastor and ask for spiritual direction. Talking to someone will break the chain of negative thoughts that plague you in the silence and bring some refreshment to your perspective.
Next, spend time with Christ in whatever way you can. Find an adoration chapel and be with Jesus in the peaceful quiet. Pray the stations of the cross. Get out into nature and reflect on the power and beauty of God’s creation. Unite your troubles to Jesus in His suffering and ask Him for a special grace to overcome the negative thoughts you have. He has these special graces waiting for you!
But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me did not prove vain; but I labored even more than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me (1 Corinthians 15:10).
