Love is not a feeling, it is a decisive act of the will to sacrifice yourself for the good of another person.
This is important to remember when you are trying to improve yourself, such as working on forgiving someone who has hurt you. You might say you forgive them, but in your heart, you still feel resentment and believe that you haven’t truly forgiven until you don’t feel the negativity anymore, but don’t let your feelings fool you.
Just because you don’t “feel” a positive emotion connected with what you are trying to accomplish does not mean you are failing in your struggle to be better. You have made the decision to forgive or detach or whatever your struggle is and you need to accept that this is enough. It is God’s grace that sweetens your heart and removes the resentment. What matters the most is that you put forth the effort and leave the rest to Christ.
And may the Lord our God show us His approval and make our efforts successful, yes, make our efforts successful! (Psalm 90:17)
