Bob & Carol Are Traveling The Distance Together

Bob and Carol both live very active lifestyles. The 68-year-old man and the 74-year-old woman from Michigan have full lives. Bob exercises both the body and the mind through his regular workouts and reading. Carol has an outgoing style that leads her to look forward to meeting new people and expanding her horizons. Carol still works part-time, while Bob is a retired schoolteacher, who also served his country for more than 20 years in the Army.

Each had been through the loss of a spouse—Carol when her husband passed away, and Bob had gone through a divorce.

Just a few months ago, Bob joined CatholicMatch and he sent and received many expressions of interest.

“One lady really caught my eye,” he said, referring to Carol. “When I wrote to her, she also seemed quite interested and we started sending messages to each other regularly.

The messages went from casual exchanges to much longer messages and later turned into phone conversations. They got to know each other on a deeper level and “we soon realized we had an awful lot in common,” Bob recalled.

The couple’s outgoing personalities made the first date a success and it led them to take turns driving back and forth (more than 100 miles) to see each other. On one of the trips, Carol spoke excitedly about a coming vacation. She was going to England and Scotland. When Bob mentioned that it sounded interesting, she didn’t hesitate. “Why don’t you go with me?”

Bob immediately got on the phone with the touring agency. They made it possible for him to join the trip at the end of this month.

Time will tell what the future holds for Bob and Carol, but the optimistic outlook they both bring to life has them feeling excited for what lies ahead.

I think this sounds like a wonderful experience and I wish them well. I have been searching for that perfect lady for a long time. I have found many who I thought were Christians only to be disappointed. Never give up Gpd has a plan, he just will not tell me what it is. Jesse

I’m happy for a good outcome, but maybe I am not understanding something with this lovely couple. They are not married, yet taking a trip oversees together.

I have seen this many times, and feel scandalized as a Catholic, that a ‘practicing’ catholic dating couple would travel together. Even if things are platonic, traveling together, people assume shared accomodations, and in todays society, assume a sexual relationship. This is not in line with the teachings of the church.

Please excuse if a misunderstanding, but also it needs to made plain in the ‘story’ that this couple is an encouragment of living a real catholic christian relationship.

    Best wishes to them both!

Actually it seems quite a few of these “success stories” are questionable for a Catholic site, e.g. civil marriages, actually many like stories of long-distance romances with unmarried couples spending weeks together or traveling together, etc. etc. I wonder if any thought about presenting what is morally correct in a Catholic way is even given to many of the stories in this column.

I am happy for the couple. This gives me a lot courage since i thought i am too old to be on search for my partner. However, in my opinion it is better to get married before taking such trips to overseas after all we are human beings and have feelings.

Lets take God’s teachings and church teachings seriously and follow them accordingly.

HI ANNE, I AM BOB AND I WANT TO ASSURE YOU THAT MY FRIEND CAROL AND I ARE
TRULY DOING THINGS IN A FAITHFUL AND PROPER CATHOLIC MANNER. THE TRIP WE
ARE GOING ON LEAVES THIS SUNDAY, OCT.21, FOR SCOTLAND FIRST. WE ARE ON A
RELIGIOUS PILGRIMAGE TO HOLY PLACES LOCATED IN SCOTLAND AND ENGLAND.
IT IS BEING SPONSORED BY THE DOMINICAN ORDER AND IS BEING LED BY TWO NUNS. H OTEL ACCOMODATIONS FOR EACH PILGRIM ARE SEPARATE.

Bob & Carol are no longer on CatholicMatch, but they have read the comments and asked me to post this statement on their behalf, regarding the appropriateness of their relationship….

“We are sorry that you question whether the trip to England and Scotland by
Bob and Carol is a proper thing for them to do. However, these are some added facts about their trip that may help. The trip that they are taking is a Catholic religious sponsored Pilgrimage to holy places in these two countries. The Dominican Order in Grand Rapids is heading up this trip and two Dominican nuns are leading the pilgrimage tour.

29 Catholics will be on this pilgrimage. At each stop separate accommodations are made for the pilgrims of this tour. Carol and Bob will share this religious experience together.

Even when visiting each other in their long distance romance they are
careful not to lead each other into temptation. Each of their homes has a guest bedroom which the other uses when visiting. Their weekends together always include Catholic religious services and activities.”

The information you just provided is all for the good ,and basically rewrites the story, making it a great one. As readers, we rely on what is presented to us. My point is that more care should be taken in the writing of the stories so that good and faithful people are presented as they are. Let’s not have important details about the practice of our Catholic faith editorially removed from these stories. For many of us on this site, reading about faith-filled courtships is valuable. and inspiring. Keep reporting the positive details and do not short change the beauty of the stories.

Thank you Leslie, well put. Even in my initial comments, I always want to assume the best about people, but the way the story was written, and today’s culture, made it hard not to wonder.

I am very glad to know the rest of the story and thank the couple for the additional comments. It is very edifying as a Catholic to know that people are truly living the faith. Best wishes to them both!
