God’s Healing Mercy Brought John & Lucy Together

Once John met Lucy in person he knew she was the one.

John was hurting. The 60-year-old life insurance salesman from Chicago had a lot going for him—a good job, and four grown sons whom he was close to, but he was missing what he’d had for 31 years, a life’s companion.

“After my wife passed away, I fell into a very deep depression,” he told CatholicMatch. He and his wife had shared everything, from the simple pleasures of snuggling up together, to fulfilling grander dreams of world travel. Now, the boys were out of the house and John was alone.

“I prayed the Rosary many times asking for help,” John recalled. As part of the healing process, he began to look for someone else to share his desire to travel the globe with. “I tried almost every other dating site on earth before I found CatholicMatch,” he said. “Ladies that I met from other sites were not available to marry in the Church and that was an important point for me.”

After John's wife passed away, he was looking for someone to share life's joys with.

Lucy was on the other end of the romantic spectrum—she had never been married, and the 46-year-old nurse believed that “to live is to love and to love is to live with the person of the same faith.” She was the one who first noticed John’s profile, and that he lived just fifteen minutes away.

John and Lucy spent about four weeks in online correspondence. When they met in person, it didn’t take long to confirm what they were both coming to believe. “I knew that first night I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her,” John said. “We had so much in common and we both went to church every Sunday.”

Indeed, John saw in Lucy that answer to the prayer that pulled him through his depression.

“Lucy was so easy to fall in love with that I knew I wanted to marry her as fast as we could,” John said. And he wasted no time in making arrangements. One week after that first date, he proposed marriage and she said yes.

John believed that when you find the one who is the answer to your prayers, then it’s time to act. He contacted the priest in his local parish and last November, they were married.

“I had to follow the calling and marry the woman God sent to me,” John told CatholicMatch. I truly believe that Lucy and I are a match made in heaven!”

Said “yes”, a week after meeting? Hmmm…. Oh well, it’s nice to enjoy the “good” things in life, isn’t it.

Six months, minimum, of an honest relationship for mature adults should suffice. Your thoughts Lesley?

I have absolutely no interest in you. That is LESS THAN ZERO so be a gentleman and quit bothering me.

It’s about how choices are made. No one is impugning character. But sorry ladies, you can’t dissuade me from my opinion as much as you protest.

No luck so far, I find most women on here are way to pickey, They don’t want an older man in their life, but it’s their loss not mine.

Keep trying William. I’m two years behind you. I circulate, and find, IRL, that women as young as their early 40s like conversing w/ me. I saw where many women, when they reach 45 – 50, when finding a man of interest to them, don’t care how much older the man may be.

Well of course they dont want an old man. Why would you think they should? Unless they are looking for someone to pay the bills, marrying an old man, even if he is wonderful, means spending his later years as a nurse or at best being a widow when you are past the age that is attractive to old men.

We all know a younger wife NEVER gets sick, so her older husband has to take care of her. Don’t tell that to a 91-yo loving husband taking care of his 60-yo wife – true story. Do the marriage vows still include for better or for worse, in sickness and in health?

        Clearly and well stated.

It just goes to show you that, when you know you have met THE right one, this gentleman knew he should not “let the grass grow under his feet” waiting to decide if she was what he wanted. These two were not 20 something so they did not need to wait a year or more to decide. There is nothing wrong with that. I have known several couples who, upon meeting for the very first time, just somehow KNEW they were meant for each other. They then married quickly. Each one of those couples is still now happily married (for 30 years or more now). I think this is a wonderful story. Why not be positive in thinking that this sort of romantic ending IS possible? After all, God works in mysterious ways, if we cooperate with what His plans are for us. :)

Nice story. I wish most men were like John and were purposeful, as far as their dating intentions.

Lucy is a friend of mine and known her since her high school. She is a very good person, honest and intelligent. I don’t know John until they got married but i know for sure that their relationship would be a long and lasting one b/c God was in control. I’m happy for both of them especially for Lucy b/c she finally found a good man in John. Congratulations to both of you, my friends!!

    Lucky you! Congratulations!
I just put an end with John & I. This decision has been taken within a week after my birthday. He knows why & it is not necessary anymore. It has been more than a year we know each other & there is nothing good coming out of this. I do not see any happiness. He did not even send me a happy birthday wish, the same during last holidays. We have not gone out since last February. We have not communicate since. He hung the phone on me twice (last June & October), that why I do not have a good reason to pursue this. I need my strength to face some difficulties which are going on in my life. I do not need to be distracted anymore. I thank him to open many times my eyes. They say in difficulties moments that you see who are your good friends & I do not see that from him. I did not see that concern from him although he knows what I am going through. Usually I do not to share some of my info to people but this time I do not have a choice & I have to let know. He knows what I was going thru because I send him notes. He never replied any of them. It does not make any sense to me … I though it was shyness perhaps that makes him to delay & behave that way & tried many times to facilitate this. He was the one who approached me otherwise I would have noticed him because I was not searching for man to be with. Anyway I have to flip the page.
    May God keep him!

Hey, in your later years, if it feels right and you accept the churches teaching on premarital sex, why waste time. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Congrats John and Lucy.

I think it’s a lovely story, but they moved too fast for me-reminds me of how I got married when I eloped on a whim….I thought that was forever. What they have going for them is shared faith and God’s blessing so I’m hoping the best for them!

For God says: My end will be better than my beginning…

Relationship is an opportunity to grow. It is also a phase where such opportunity is lost and another found. When its your turn, make the most of it but learn from it’s past first to be safe. Never let the story to be one sided only.
